Experience    

High school diploma or jurisdictional equivalent requires 6,000 hours of supervised work experience specific to the SAC Job Analysis.

Associate’s degree in a related field requires 5,000 hours of supervised work experience specific to the SAC Job Analysis.

Bachelor’s degree in a related field requires 4,000 hours of supervised work experience specific to the SAC Job Analysis.

Master’s degree or higher in a related field requires 2,000 hours of supervised work experience specific to the SAC Job Analysis.

Education and Training

Minimum high school diploma or jurisdictional equivalent. 300 hours of education specific to the Job Analysis. Six hours must be in professional counselor ethics and responsibilities.

Supervision

High school diploma or jurisdictional equivalent requires 300 hours of supervision specific to the Job Analysis with a minimum of 10 hours in each domain.

Associate’s degree in a relevant field requires 250 hours of supervision specific to the Job Analysis with a minimum of 10 hours in each domain.

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field requires 200 hours of supervision specific to the Job Analysis with a minimum of 10 hours in each domain.

Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field requires 100 hours of supervision specific to the Job Analysis with a minimum of 10 hours in each domain.

Examination

Must pass the SAC Examination.

Code of Ethics

The applicant must sign a counselor specific code of ethics statement of affirmation that the applicant has read and will abide by the code of ethics.

Recertification

40 hours of continuing education earned every two years.

SAC Domains

Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC)

Experience

2,000 hours of supervised work experience specific to the CSAC Job Analysis.

Education

Master’s Degree in a relevant field from a regionally accredited college or university within the United States or colleges and universities outside the United States plus 180 hours of CSAC-specific education. Six hours must be specific to counselor ethics.

Supervision

100 hours specific to the CSAC Job Analysis with a minimum of 10 hours in each domain.

Examination

Applicants must pass the IC&RC CSAC Examination.

Code of Ethics

Applicants must sign a code of ethics statement or affirmation statement.

Recertification

40 hours of continuing education earned every two years.

CASC Domains

Independent Clinical Supervisor (ICS)

Prerequisite

Applicant must hold and maintain an SAC or CSAC credential at the IC&RC reciprocal level OR a specialty substance abuse credential in another professional discipline in the human services field at the master’s level or higher.

Experience

10,000 hours of alcohol and drug counseling specific work experience plus 4,000 hours of SAC supervisor work experience (4,000 hours may be included in the 10,000 hours and must include 200 hours of face-to-face clinical supervision).

An associate’s degree in behavioral science may substitute for 1,000 hours;

a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science may substitute for 2,000 hours;

a master’s degree in behavioral science may substitute for 4,000 hours.

Education

30 hours of education specific to the IC&RC clinical supervision domains with a minimum of five hours in each.

Examination

Applicants must pass the IC&RC ICS Examination.

Code of Ethics

Applicants must sign a clinical supervisor specific code of ethics statement or affirmation statement.

Recertification

Six hours of continuing education earned every two years. The six hours may be a part of the 40 hours obtained for the SAC or CSAC recertification.

ICS Domains 

Prevention Specialist (PS)

Prevention Specialist (PS)

Experience

2,000 hours of Prevention work experience across the PS domains.

Education

120 hours of prevention specific education. Twenty-four hours of this education must be ATOD specific. Six hours must be specific to prevention ethics.

Supervision

120 hours specific to the domains with a minimum of ten hours in each domain.

Examination

Applicants must pass the IC&RC PS Examination.

Code of Ethics

Applicants must sign a prevention specific code of ethics statement or affirmation statement.

Recertification

40 hours of continuing education earned every two years.

PS Domains




Peer Recovery (PR)

Experience

500 hours of supervised volunteer or paid work experience specific to the domains.

Education

High school diploma or jurisdictionally certified high school equivalency.

46 hours specific to the domains with 10 hours in each of the domains of Advocacy, Mentoring/Education, and Recovery/Wellness Support and 16 hours in the domain of Ethical Responsibility.

Supervision

25 hours of supervision specific to the domains. Supervision must be provided by an organization’s documented and qualified supervisory staff per job description.

Examination

CBs must require all applicants to pass the IC&RC Peer Recovery Examination.

Code of Ethics

Applicants must sign a Peer Recovery specific code of ethics statement or affirmation statement.

Recertification

20 hours of continuing education earned every two years including six hours in ethics.

PR Domains

Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJP)

For Professionals that Already hold the ADC or AADC:

Experience

2,000 hours of criminal justice work experience.

Education

100 hours of education relevant to the CCJP Job Analysis

Supervision:

100 hours of supervision specific to CCJP Job Analysis with a minimum of 10 hours in each domain.

Examination

Pass the IC&RC CCJP Examination
